Harwich Water Department News & Events
New Main Station Wells Work Underway
As you are aware, late last fall the Harwich Water Department
lost the use of the Main Station Wells, which are located at 196
Chatham Road in Harwich. Because of the loss of these wells, emergency
measures were taken by the Town to transfer funding in order to
have these wells replaced and on-line as soon as possible.
The Harwich Water Department is currently in the process of replacing
these existing wells (which were an old style vacuum system), with
the newest technology in pumping equipment. The Department is replacing
the original wells, which were installed in 1936, with new gravel
packed well and new submersible pumps with variable speed motors.
This will allow the Department better control and management of
this natural resource.
With the new submersible pumps the Department will be able to
better manage the impact and stress to our aquifer caused the large
volumes of water withdrawn during our peak demand period.
Contractors are currently installing and developing these new
wells at this present time. We expect to have this project completed
and our wells back online by January 1, 2003.
